tehkman: what do you think of having a self-fulling prophecy? is our reality based on our beliefs?

What do I think of a self-fulfilling prophecy? I have never had an experience where someone “prophesied” in the religious sense and it came true. If anything, modern day religious prophecies are no different than horoscopes or tarot cards or fortune telling. They are overly generic to such an extent, that they can relate to almost every person. Such things are not truthful or correct in themselves, but are crafted in such a way that it can hook onto small pieces of truth within circumstances. For example, when someone “prophesies” that a family member will be sick in the future (it is a really simple example but for arguments sake). The prophesy is so open ended that it is able to hook onto some piece of truth somewhere in your circumstance, that small piece of truth being that there is a high probability that one of your relatives is or will indeed be sick. This then produces the psychological effect of appearing as fact and as truth when in actuality it is rather like a disguised statement of the inevitable and the obvious. Self fulfilling prophecies in another sense is assembling facts and predicting what might occur based on factual evidence and not by some random will to “predict”.

As to whether or not our reality is based on our beliefs, I would have to say that it is impossible to exist without beliefs. The important aspect of this is whether are beliefs are factually based or based off of emotion or societal projectivism (my theory that most of our beliefs are subliminally projected onto us by the numerous partakers of our respective societies). Our beliefs determine our perceived reality but cannot determine our actual or “Real” reality because our perceptions and beliefs are subject to our personal interpretation and actual reality is distorted the very moment it collides with our consciousness and goes through the process of being digested by our worldview and paradigm.
