Newt Gingrich: “Invented”
“I believe that the commitments that were made at the time – remember, there was no Palestine as a state, It was part of the Ottoman Empire. And I think that we’ve had an invented Palestinian people, who are in fact Arabs and were historically part of the Arab community. And they had a chance to go many places.” - Newt Gingrich
If Mr. Gingrich is such a history buff, then how did he forget about America’s own origins? If the Palestinians are invented based on the premise that they are essentially Arabs and were a part of the Ottoman Empire, then are not American’s also an “invented” people? Were the Founders and the original colonists themselves “British” and subjects of the British Empire? Did not America dispose itself of its British-ness during the revolution and from the ashes invented what essentially became American-ness?
With that said, Mr. Gingrich, if you could make retrace your steps and choose whether or not to de-legitimize a people, would you make the same choice in light of our own history and founding?
